Dearil got brave enough to venture out of the cabin, fairly sure that the beast was gone for the time being. He was grateful to whatever might have drawn it away. Having tied up Heather before leaving and making sure that Jason was secured too in case the kid woke up, Dearil had no need to hurry in making his assessment of whether it was safe to get back on track with his original escape plan. Sadly, no matter what he did, there was just no means of knowing for sure without actually just rolling the dice.

He had halfway crossed the small clearing that surrounded the cabin when voices could be heard among the trees. Dearil froze, listening. There were several distinct voices, likely more than he could deal with, even ambushing them. Unable to hear them clearly enough to make out what was being said, Dearil figured his best course of action was to retreat into the cabin. It was possible whoever the people were, they were just passing by and had no idea the cabin was even here.

Hurrying back inside, Dearil was greeted with a wide eyed expression from Heather. She desperately wanted to ask him what was happening but knew better than to say anything. The corner of Dearil's lips ticked up in a partial grin at the sight of her bound to the bed she sat on with such emotion being directed at him.

Heather wasn't gagged so Dearil gave her a gentle reminder. “Not a sound out of you, girl, until I say otherwise. We've got company outside. One peep and I'll slice off your breasts. Nod if you understand that I ain't kidding.”

Nodding frantically, Heather kept her mouth shut. Sitting helpless where she was, Heather watched Dearil peering out the cabin's right side window. Jason was still out cold, bound up, and lying on the floor. Dearil ignored them both, attention focused on those approaching outside.

A group of six emerged from the woods in front of the cabin. Dearil had dealt with enough marshals over his “career” to know that's exactly what two of them were. They were carrying Remington 870 shotguns. With them were a man and woman wearing sheriff department uniforms. The short, female deputy appeared to be injured. The other two of the six were a woman in an EMT uniform and a woman in plain clothes. Even Dearil’s keen mind couldn’t exactly place what the plain clothes woman might be. A guide, perhaps? Like the EMT, she wasn't armed other than a hatchet and knife that were sheathed on her belt. He'd been right about being unable to take on all of them by himself. He wouldn't have stood a chance alone out in the open. Holed up in the cabin though. . .that was another story. Dearil fetched his rifle and returned to stand beside the grimy window where he had been. If they decided to check out the cabin instead of turning away, the first shot at least would be his.
